"Bad trip" hardly does justice to the hellish journey undertaken by the Anderson family in this gripping thriller. Leaving their North Carolina home to visit Long Horn Caverns outside of St. Louis, police officer Jay Anderson, wife Carrie, and 10-year-old daughter Emily are attempting to rebuild familial bonds. Consumed by job-related stress, Jay has taken to beating Carrie. Emily, who has a telepathic ability, is confused and frightened by her parents' angry thoughts. When escaped convict Crow and his amoral girlfriend, Heddy, kidnap the family to provide cover for their escape to Mexico, it looks as though things are going from bad to worse for the beleaguered Andersons. Told partially through Emily's narration to a police psychologist and partially through the viewpoints of the convicts, Mosiman's story is ugly and violent--and utterly compelling. Perhaps most disturbing is Jay's slow but steady move to the dark side, as he begins to fall for Heddy's dangerous allure. Top-notch suspense for mature readers. Jenny McLarin

THE STORY
The family is on a much needed vacation. A policeman, his teacher wife, and their daughter, Emily, a little girl with a preternatural gift, need a break. Emily's parents aren't getting along, but then they hardly ever did these days.
When the family stops for a tour into the Longhorn Caverns, they have no idea something is about to happen to change their lives. Waiting for them are a young couple on the run. One is, Crow, an escaped convict. The other is his girlfriend, Heddy, who helped him escape and will do anything to keep him free. They're got some money waiting for them down south, if only they can get there.
Once the family exits the caves, they are kidnapped, and now they're all on the run. It's going to be a very Bad Trip South.
Explicit language and sexual scenes, not intended for anyone under eighteen.
BAD TRIP SOUTH eBook Billie Sue Mosiman
This book is so full of suspense and terror that there are times where you want to put it down but you know if you do it will drive you over the edge because you have to know what happens. Most of the story is told by Emily, she is the 10 year old daughter of a fifth grade school teacher and a cop. Her life has never been easy and she has lived with fear that most children her age never have to know. Having no friends, only her parents, who are far from having a normal and loving relationship. As bad as there life is, with a divorce in the cards and the family being separated you would never think it could get worse and then on one of the last vacations as a family their life takes another turn into the even deeper depths of hell.
This is a compelling read that will command every bit of your attention from beginning to end.

BAD TRIP SOUTH eBook Billie Sue Mosiman Reviews
Loved reading from the child's point of view. Her clarity of thought and her self-described ability to read adult' s minds added interest to an already interesting tale. Short, intense, a bit heart breaking as the story unfolds. Recommended.
Billie Sue does it again. The book just reached out and took me in right from the start. Is very hard to put down once you start reading it. Very well written and put together. Just when I thought I figured out where the story was heading, it went in another direction. It was truly an excellent read. Have already told quite a few people to get this one and read. You will not be sorry with this story!! Awesome job Billie!!
A strange, I.e. not typical, crazed killers and hostage takers, with a bad cop thrown in for a twist. I still wonder who is more evil, the cop or the psychos? I do know the cop is less likable to me. The heroine, the little girl, is a little too much, but still believable. It's a good story, written well, and perhaps just too wordy at the end.
Billie Sue Mosiman has redeemed herself in my opinion. While I did not care for the last book I read by her "Wireman" due to the graphic killing of a little boy, I loved this book. I have recommended it to my friends. I am a student of psychology working toward my bachelor degree in applied psychology, So I am very interested in the psychological aspect of the story. I also believe in telepathy so I found that portion of her book intriguing. I loved that most of it was written from the point of view of a very adult thinking 10 year old while still maintaining a ten year old's innocence and wonder. Great book.
Mossiman wrote a well planned, frightening novel here. Without plot spoilers let me say that this is a hostage situation styled terror novel about a family and a Bonnie and Clyde style couple. The antagonists are well defined, realistic characters. If you have ever seen "Natural Born Killers" then you will have an idea of what the main antagonists are like. The family has it's own problems, and that's all I'm gonna say on that.
The only problem I had was that Mossiman seemed to have held back several times. Her antagonists seemed to have developed consciences several times regarding the child. Realistically the antagonists would have been uncaring if the child witnessed a rape; however, while the author kept the trauma to the child on a down-low, there is enough violence and a high enough body count to satisfy any horror/suspense junkie.
This story takes place on the road with a couple of thugs, a cop on the wrong path, his wife and their daughter. Excellent story, very well written, and very entertaining. Emily is 10 years old and has a gift that allows her to know what people are thinking with great clarity. While on a family vacation, she, along with her parents, are abducted by a Heddy and Crow, two low lifes running from the law and a drug cartel.
The story is told from two distinct points of view, one, through Emily and how she sees the world, and the other as it is unfolding. Although there are two POV's, the story is structuarally seamless making it clear who is speaking and what is happening at all times.
Do yourself a favour and read this story. No one weaves a tale better than Billie Sue Mosiman and no one knows how to do it with such finesse.
I totally enjoyed the ride I took with this book, much more so than those in the story did theirs! Mosiman pulled out all the stops here making this trip a solid E Ticket ride, as we used to say. I saw one earlier review who complained the "Ending was predictable and not surprising." Well, it is basically told to you early on. You'd have to be pretty dense to not see it when it's spelled out for you. I'd like to use another old quote, "Success is the journey, not the destination." So it is with this book. It's not where you are heading that thrills you, it's what happens along the way. Mosiman is a true Master Storyteller in league with the Best. Go ahead, get in the car, leave the driving to her; she has the trip all planned for you. If you are looking for gritty action and pedal to the metal pacing, you're going to enjoy your Trip.
